Because I Said So

Definition
A four-word household ruling issued when Dad considers the explanation complete and the questions continue. Commonly used as a final answer, even when the other party has prepared several follow-up questions.
Field Observation
Most often heard in kitchens, hallways and the narrow stretch of evening between "put your shoes away" and "how is that a new question?" Dad begins with a perfectly serviceable explanation. The explanation receives a "why?" He adds a little detail. That detail receives its own "why?" By the fourth exchange, the discussion has acquired witnesses and Dad is holding one sneaker. The argument gets longer. His answer gets shorter. Then the four words arrive, in a voice he recognizes from his own childhood.
Common Signs
- Repeats the original answer more slowly, as though the dispute is a reception problem.
- Begins a sentence with "We already talked about this."
- Holds up one finger to indicate that the explanation has reached its final edition.
- Can locate a missing shoe while maintaining that the matter is settled.
Warning Signs
- Adds "That's why" to an answer already containing "because."
- Announces "End of discussion" to a discussion still very much in progress.
- Notices that his stance, sigh and exact wording now belong to his father.
- Briefly considers calling his father to apologize.
Typical Dad Defense
"I gave you the long answer three whys ago."
Dad-a-Pedia Note
Dad once promised himself he would never use this phrase. Then one evening he heard it come out of his own mouth, complete with his father's pause. Some family heirlooms arrive without a box.
