Dad Shift
Share
Definition
A period of time in which Dad assumes operational control of a specific family mission. The task changes. The behavior doesn't.
Field Observation
Saturday breakfast has been assigned to Dad. Within minutes, the counter holds three bowls, a spatula has become a pointer, and pancake orders are being accepted in a sequence nobody else knew existed. The same expression appears when he loads the car or takes the kids out for the afternoon. Dad has the assignment. He would now like everyone to stop changing the assignment.
Common Signs
- Announces, "I've got this," while assembling supplies.
- Checks the time, the destination, and whether anybody has eaten.
- Turns a simple outing into a route with optional stops.
- Keeps a running head count even when there are only two children.
Warning Signs
- The pancake batch now has a quality-control sample.
- Someone asks how long this will take and receives a plan.
- Dad gives a progress report to a person who only asked where the syrup was.
- The original task is finished, but Dad has spotted one more thing he can handle.
Typical Dad Defense
"Everybody's fed. Everybody's here. I'd call that a good shift."
Dad-a-Pedia Note
A Dad Shift ends when the mission is complete. Dad may remain on duty long enough to explain how smoothly it went.
