Just Resting My Eyes

Definition

A form of television viewing in which Dad closes both eyes while retaining full authority over the remote. Frequently mistaken for sleep by observers who have not yet tried changing the channel.

Field Observation

Dad settles into his chair for a show he specifically wanted to watch. His eyes close during the opening scene. A few minutes later, someone gently lifts the remote from his hand and selects another channel. "I was watching that." Asked what was happening, Dad identifies the man with the briefcase, explains why nobody trusts him and requests the original channel. His eyes close again before the explanation does.

Common Signs

  • Describes closed eyes as a perfectly reasonable way to follow the dialogue.
  • Maintains a surprisingly secure grip on the remote.
  • Supplies one accurate plot detail when challenged.
  • Says "I'm listening" without changing position.

Warning Signs

  • The family begins discussing the remote transfer in whispers.
  • Dad detects a channel change faster than anyone can explain it.
  • A request to turn the volume down arrives from the apparently sleeping chair.
  • He resumes his account of the plot with his eyes still closed.

Typical Dad Defense

"I don't need to look at him to know he's lying."

Dad-a-Pedia Note

The family has learned to leave the show on and let him finish not sleeping. He has earned a quiet half hour, even if the official record calls it television.
