Definition
Shortcut (noun): A Dad-selected route advertised in minutes and evaluated in views, snack stops, and how often the family asks to take it again.
Field Observation
Most commonly announced on a family drive when the highway offers a perfectly reasonable arrival time. Dad proposes a turn toward the hills and mentions a small place with excellent pie. The mountain view is included. So is his detailed ordering advice.
Common Signs
- "I know a shortcut."
- Describes the route by its overlooks and food stops rather than its mileage.
- Remembers exactly where the creek has a picnic table.
- Calls a stop for pie "making good time."
Warning Signs
- "One quick look" requires everybody to get out of the car.
- A second scenic stop has entered the itinerary.
- The family starts discussing which route to take next year.
Typical Dad Defense
"You can get there faster. You will not get better pie."
Dad-a-Pedia Note
The official estimate measures the trip from departure to arrival. Dad includes the part where everybody leans on the same railing, looks at the view, and forgets to ask how much longer. His calculations are difficult to audit with a stopwatch.
