Nostalgia Dad™

Definition

A father who treats outdated objects as proof that civilization peaked somewhere between vinyl records, paper maps, and saving a résumé on a 3.5-inch floppy disk.

Field Observation

A family member asks for a charging cable and receives a short tour of the cassette era. Dad demonstrates the pencil-rewind technique with the calm confidence of a man certain this will be on the test. The charging cable is still available, once the demonstration concludes.

Common Signs

  • Owns cables for devices that no longer exist.
  • Believes paper maps built character.
  • Can explain why old things were better with no preparation whatsoever.
  • Remembers where he bought the stereo more clearly than where he left his phone.

Warning Signs

  • Uses the phrase, “They don’t make ’em like they used to,” while holding something that absolutely stopped working in 2004.
  • Says, “I'll show you,” and heads toward a box the family has never seen opened.
  • A discussion about the best route now includes the proper way to refold a map.

Typical Dad Defense

“I'm keeping it so you can see how this stuff worked.”

Dad-a-Pedia Note

Nostalgia Dad™ is not stuck in the past. He is simply keeping backup copies of civilization.
