Dad Music

Definition
A collection of songs a father insists are objectively superior to all modern music, regardless of genre, decade, or evidence to the contrary.
Field Observation
Dad Music is most commonly detected in vehicles, garages, back patios, and anywhere a dad has gained temporary control of a speaker. The condition often presents without warning after someone says, “play something good.”
Common Signs
- Possesses at least one playlist containing Journey, Steely Dan, Van Halen, The Who, or Led Zeppelin.
- Refers to songs released before their children were born as “the good stuff.”
- Increases volume when a guitar solo begins.
- Taps the steering wheel like he has been personally invited to join the band.
- Knows exactly when to say, “now this is music.”
Warning Signs
- Begins a road trip with “you kids need to hear this.”
- Explains who played bass on a song nobody asked about.
- Calls streaming playlists “mix tapes” by accident.
- Turns the volume down only to explain why the song is important.
Typical Dad Defense
“They do not make songs like this anymore.”
Dad-a-Pedia Note
Dad Music is less a musical genre and more a hereditary condition that appears shortly after the birth of the first child. It may be passed down through air guitar, lawn mowing, and long car rides.
